Charlton boss Alan Curbishley was delighted with his side's New Year victory over Arsenal at The Valley - a second win in three days for the Addicks after the Boxing Day thrashing at West Ham.
Jonatan Johansson scored his 13th goal of the season in the 38th minute in the home side's first real attack of the game.
Arsenal best chance to equalise was from the penalty spot - but Dean Kiely brilliantly saved Nelson Vivas' 75th-minute spot-kick leaving the Gunners equal on points with Sunderland in second place and trailing Premiership leaders Manchester United by 11 points after the Red Devils beat West Ham later in the day.
Curbishley said: "I'm delighted because after West Ham we have bounced back and done it in style.
"I made five changes after that game and they responded magnificently at Maine Road.
"Arsenal started strongly and had a lot of possession but did not really create any chances and we scored with our first chance and from then it was game on.
"In the end the penalty save has got us the points but I don't think anyone can begrudge us them.
"What pleased me most is that my players dug in and showed a resilience we have had here at the Valley and hopefully now we can take it on our travels.
"We need a few more wins so everyone can relax and then let's see where we can go."
Curbishley gave special praise to Johansson, who could be a bargain at £3.75m, adding: "The only thing I was concerned about was that he had never had a really long run of games.
"He then picked up a hamstring injury a week before the start of the season but we have nursed him through and if he gets a season under his belt who knows?"
