Mary Davies, chief executive of the Special Olympics, has hit out angrily at remarks made earlier in the week by pop maestro Louis Walsh about the World Games.
Ms Davies said the remarks were an insult to the people of Ireland.
“These games aren’t organised by any one person or any one group of people,” she said.
“There are 30,000 people behind these games and possibly more than that.
“I think it is just an insult to all the people of Ireland.
“I have no idea why he (Walsh) ever chose to say that but I think that the people will be very dismissive of it because it was such an insult to them.”
Mr Walsh apologised today for the remarks.
Spokesman Julian Davis called on Louis Walsh to clarify his apology.
He said: “If he thinks certain people are on an ego trip then he should come out and name them.
“I don’t think anyone associated with the games is on an ego trip.
“To be absolutely honest we are not interested in what Louis Walsh has to say.
“He made his point, we responded and now we want the attention to move to the athletes themselves.”
