Scotland’s Raymond Russell today failed in his bid to set on a unique scoring record in the inaugural Nordic Open.
Russell birdied the final six holes of his first round on Thursday evening to card an opening 65 in Copenhagen, three shots behind France’s Raphael Jacquelin who fired a course-record 62.
The 31-year-old from Edinburgh already held a share of the record for most consecutive birdies on tour – firing eight in a row in the British Masters in 1997 – but his effort, and that of the eight other players to manage it, had all come in the same round.
Three more at the start of his second round would have seen him set a new record in a most unusual fashion, but he needed to birdie the three holes he had failed to in his homeward nine of 29.
And a birdie at the par four first again proved beyond him, two putts for par leaving him on seven under par and still three off the lead.
Jacquelin was among the later starters but knew he was certain to be overtaken with the Simon’s Golf Club course again yielding plenty of birdies.
Two of them had come from Warrington’s Phillip Archer in his first two holes, the 31-year-old moving into second place on nine under, one ahead of Surrey’s Andrew Raitt and Midlander John Bickerton.
Home favourite Thomas Bjorn had yet to pick up any shots however, the Dane parring his first four holes to remain five under par.
