A 10-year-old Austrian girl shot herself through the heart with her father’s gun, committing suicide because she had failed a school maths test, it was reported today.

The child, identified only as Tina B, was found by her father, an army officer, in woods near their home, the Austria Press Agency said. The family lived in Pirka, about 80 miles south of Vienna.

Police said the father could face charges for leaving his gun in an unlocked cabinet in the house.

Tina B described her frustrations with school in her diary.

Though she was an excellent student in other subjects, she struggled with maths and had recently failed an exam.

The girl outlined her suicide plans in a diary entry found by police after the shooting.

In the entry, which she described as her last testament, she wished her parents ‘‘a long life and good luck,’’ police said.
