ICTU calls for freeze in corporation tax

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has called for corporation tax to be frozen at 16%, despite Government promises to reduce the rate to 12.5% by next year.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has called for corporation tax to be frozen at 16%, despite Government promises to reduce the rate to 12.5% by next year.

In its pre-budget submission, the ICTU also called for social welfare payments to be linked to inflation, saying the poorest members of society should not be forced to pay for the economic downturn.

ICTU said businesses must bear the brunt of some of Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy's budgetary measures, but said its proposals for research and development tax credits would help give some money back to the business sector.
