Libyan police have fired tear gas at demonstrators who tried to storm the British embassy in the capital Tripoli.

The Foreign Office has confirmed there are demonstrations outside the British embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

A spokeswoman wouldn't be drawn on reports that an effort had been made to storm the building, nor would she comment on reports that police had fired tear gas at protestors.

"There are demonstrations outside the embassy and naturally we are concerned about the security of the staff and the building," said the spokeswoman.
