Former Scotland international Colin Hendry believes the spirit of the underdog must work in Berti Vogts’ favour in the World Cup 2006 qualifying group.
The Scots have been placed in Group Five alongside Italy, Slovenia, Norway, Belarus and Moldova.
Scotland’s most recent outing saw them battered 6-0 by Holland in Amsterdam but Hendry is confident Vogts’ side will relish this next challenge.
Hendry told Sky Sports News: “We have let ourselves down away from home in the past, especially against teams we are expected to beat.
“When we are the underdog, sometimes it makes life easier for us because people are writing us off before we are playing that game. But we will see what happens.
“If we are fortunate to play well enough to get into the top two of the group, great, but there could be a play-off.”
But the ex-Blackburn and Rangers central defender is optimistic Scotland will be able to hold their own in the group although he joked the combination of England, Wales and Northern Ireland in Group Six was tempting.
Hendry added: “It would have been quite nice to join the lads in Group Six!
“Now Berti has assembled his most experienced side and games against the likes of Italy will be exciting.
“There are difficult trips to Belarus and Moldova but we have got a chance, although there are other teams we would rather have had.”
