Connell to become cardinal today

The Archbishop of Dublin, Desmond Connell, will today be elevated to a cardinal.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Desmond Connell, will today be elevated to a cardinal.

He is one of 42 new cardinals to be created at St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City today by Pope John Paul II.

During the ceremony, Desmond Connell and the other cardinals-in-waiting will appear before the Pope in their red robes.

Then each one will be called before him individually to receive his blessing.

It will be witnessed by almost 250 of Archbishop Connell's family and friends, including Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
