One of the men tipped to mount a challenge to the Fine Gael leader John Bruton has pulled out of a planned radio interview.

Jim Mitchell was expected to give the interview this morning but withdrew as frantic media speculation continued over a possible leadership bid.

Earlier, Sunday newspapers were reporting a secret meeting between Deputy Mitchell and the other possible challenger, Michael Noonan, last night.

However, despite the speculation, John Bruton is standing firm.
