Lennox Lewis will make his next world heavyweight title defence in Johannesburg on April 21.
The venue for his clash with Hasim Rahman has been confirmed as Carnival City.
The choice of Johannesburg came as a surprise, as it was expected the fight would be staged in either Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas or Monaco.
South African promoter Rodney Berman is involved in the promotion.
It is arguably the biggest fight in Africa since Muhammad Ali's famous clash with George Foreman in Zaire in 1974.
Lewis said: "Over 25 years ago Ali and Foreman had the 'Rumble in the Jungle' in Africa.
"I am pleased to follow in Muhammad Ali's footsteps by bringing world heavyweight boxing back to the African continent.
The champion's business manager, Adrian Ogun, added: "I leave for South Africa this weekend to ratify the deal with Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves, a Johannesburg-based promotional company registered on the South African stock exchange."
