A man in his early 20s is recovering in hospital following a shooting in the north side of Limerick city this morning.

The victim was shot at 10.30am in Creaval Park, Moyross, in an incident believed to be connected to an ongoing feud in the area.

This morning's daylight attack comes on foot of a number of tit-for-tat shootings in the large council housing esate in recent months.

The injured man was immediately rushed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where his injuries have been described as non life-threatening.

Four men have been arrested by gardaí investigating today's gun attack. They are being held for questioning at Mayorstone and Henry Street garda stations under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Today's shooting happened just two days after gardaí were shot at in a separate incident in the St Mary's Park area of Limerick city.

At least five shots were fired at two plainclothes detectives and their garda patrol car last Friday morning at around 4am.

The two gardaí were targetted in the St Munchin's Street area of St Mary's Park, where they were investigating two earlier shootings.

Shots were fired at a house on St Munchin's Street at 11pm on Thursday night and a second house on the same street was targetted a few hours later at 3.30am.

Both houses were occupied at the time but nobody was injured, although the two front doors and several front windows were damaged in the gun attacks.

A man in 20s was arrested shortly after 9am on Friday morning in the St Mary's Park area in connection with the shootings which are thought to be linked to a localised dispute in the St Mary's Park area.

He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
