The Red Cross has appealed to the Irish public to help alleviate a famine threatening more than three million people in Malawi.

The Red Cross has appealed to the Irish public to help alleviate a famine threatening more than three million people in Malawi.

The southern African nation's population is currently facing starvation due to drought and food shortages.

Irish Red Cross chairman David Andrews, who is on a fact-finding mission in the country, said 43% of the population also have no access to safe water, while 97% lack access to adequate sanitation.
