Vaz refuses to detail role in Hindujas affair for now

Keith Vaz has refused to detail his involvement in the Hinduja passport affair.

Keith Vaz has refused to detail his involvement in the Hinduja passport affair.

The Foreign Office minister said, however, he would be "very happy" for all his correspondence on the subject to be published after the Government inquiry led by Sir Anthony Hammond QC.

Tony Blair said he could not see what Mr Vaz had done wrong.

The Home Office has disclosed that Mr Vaz asked when decisions would be made in the application by the wealthy Hinduja brothers for a passport.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "From the look of the papers I have seen, I cannot see anything wrong with what has been done.

"Keith is a prominent Asian MP, they are prominent people from the Asian community - he made representations on their behalf."

Speaking in his Sedgefield constituency, the PM added: "I cannot see anything wrong in him making representations on other members of the Asian community."

Mr Vaz, MP for Leicester East, is the latest minister to be embroiled in the controversy over the application for naturalisation by wealthy Indian brothers Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja.

Mr Vaz said: "Let's get the facts, let's not talk about innuendo. Let's put aside all the garbage that's written about Peter Mandelson.

"Let's get at the facts. I'm very happy to have all my correspondence published. I don't think you will find it as exciting as you think it will be."
