Retired driving testers could be asked to return to work on a temporary basis to help relieve the current backlog in the system.
It is one of a number of ideas under discussion between the Department of Transport and unions in a bid to cut the waiting time for tests.
Driving testers will also be asked to work more weekends and longer hours.
