Al-Megrahi’s lawyer William Taylor told the court that his client ‘‘maintains his innocence,’’ an indication he will appeal the conviction.

Libyan Ambassador Hamed al-Hedderi entered the high security courtroom an hour before the judges were due to take the bench.

In 85 days of hearings, the court heard 235 witnesses present more than 10,000 pages of testimony.

The defence called only three witnesses after failing to obtain documents from the Syrian government it said would implicate a Damascus-backed Palestinian terror group operating in Europe around the time of the Lockerbie bombing.

The charges, which began May 3, 2000, were brought by the Government and it is the first murder trial under Scottish law to be held without a jury.
