Westmeath footballers have been dealt a blow ahead of their Leinster SFC semi-final on Sunday week, with the news that Fergal Wilson is likely to be ruled out with a suspected cruciate ligament injury.
Wilson is awaiting the results of a scan on the injury he sustained while in action for his club Tubberclair against Tang in the Division 2 of the Westmeath Senior Football League last Sunday.
The 2004 Leinster SFC winner had only made a recent return to the Lake County set-up after sustaining a broken finger. He was on the bench for his side's Leinster SFC quarter-final win over Wicklow earlier this month.
"I just slid in to collect a ball on the wet surface and felt my knee go," he told the Westmeath Independent.
"To be honest, I thought I'd just twisted my knee a little bit and that it would be okay, so I continued for a short period.
"But the knee went completely from under me when I moved for the next ball. I knew something was wrong and the Tubberclair physio wasn't too positive from the off.
"I've since visited the Westmeath team doctor and he's not too optimistic either.
"He thinks it could be a cruciate ligament injury, and that would be a desperate blow for me," added the 30-year-old forward.
