Two men were being questioned by police today following the savage murder of the nephew of a Sinn Fein Assembly Member in north Belfast.

Kieran Kelly, 35, was beaten to death in his Antrim Road home yesterday, while a woman who was also in the flat suffered minor injuries after she was assaulted.

Sinn Fein Mid Ulster MLA John Kelly said the family was shocked by the murder.

“The violence of his death, and this makes it even sadder, was in contrast to the very gentle nature of Kieran. He was a very gentle and a very sensitive young man,” he said.

“It is that violence, which was in contrast to Kieran, that hurts really most of all and hurts his mother and father.”

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to serious head injuries following the assault at about 9am yesterday, but died shortly afterwards.

Two men from the city were arrested in connection with the incident yesterday and continued to be questioned today, a police spokesman said.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information about the attack, which is not believed to be sectarian, to come forward.

Meanwhile, police were continuing to question a man today in connection with the murder of another man in Bangor, Co Down.

Michael O’Hare, 36, died in a blaze at a flat in Dufferin Avenue, which police are treating as suspicious.

Firefighters dragged the victim from the flat but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were a number of suspicious circumstances surrounding the blaze.

Anyone with information about the fire, which occurred shortly before 9pm on Saturday night, has been asked to contact police.
