Bookies' favourite Philip Seymour Hoffman won the best actor award at the Oscars for his role as writer Truman Capote in the biopic Capote.

Hoffman beat Heath Ledger for Brokeback Mountain, David Straitharn for Good Night, And Good Luck, Joaquin Phoenix for Walk The Line and Terrence Howard for Hustle & Flow.

“I’m overwhelmed, really overwhelmed,” he said.

Hoffman dedicated the award to his mother, who raised him as a single parent and took him to see his first play.

“My mum’s name is Marilyn O’Connor,” he said. “She’s here tonight and I would like if you see her for you to congratulate her because she brought up four kids alone and she deserves congratulations for that.”
