Italian takes axe to slot machines after losing streak

A gambler smashed up slot machines with an axe after losing €5,000.

Nure Bregu, from Italy, strolled into a bar and destroyed several of the devices when he lost his temper with the addictive game after he threw away thousands of pounds over the preceding of two weeks.

The bar owner - who refused to be named - said: "He comes in here all the time to play the machines. He's had some wins, but he spends a lot of money. He is a labourer and only works every now and then.

"He's normally a very quiet man. He just walked in very calmly with an axe and smashed all the machines. There were several customers by them at the time and they were terrified.

"Luckily no one was hurt, but the machines are all broken. It's going to cost me to replace them and I will be losing customers as when people came in they would always order something from the bar."

Following the incident, the 47-year-old labourer left the establishment as though nothing had happened and waited outside for the police to arrive.

Nure was found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon and criminal damage, and was ordered to spend six months in jail.

However, due to over-crowding in Italian prisons, he was let off from serving his time.
