Vietnamese authorities are trying to contain an oil spill from a sunken Malaysian ship discovered recently off the country's southern coast.

Diesel fuel is leaking from the container ship that sank in late 1995, says Dang Minh Hong, office chief of VietsovPetro.

The ship was discovered recently by company divers near a VietsovPetro underwater pipeline.

All 19 crew members were rescued when the ship, the Gigekex Tajo, sank in November 1995.

According to the Tuoi Tre newspaper, the vessel, which was carrying 166 containers and 115 tons of diesel oil, was not found after it sank.
