Some 40,000 healthy sheep are to be slaughtered in a bid to halt the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Anglesey.

All sheep in an area on the south west corner of the island are to be killed. The programme will start on Monday.

There have been 12 confirmed cases of the disease in Anglesey.

Welsh Assembly officials are also looking at the possibility of a cull of pigs in the area. A decision is expected before the sheep cull starts.

Welsh Rural Affairs minister Carwyn Jones said he has not yet decided how the sheep would be killed, but the quickest method would be used. He said he hoped to avoid burning animals.

He also said the army could be called in to help the programme.

Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Foods officials are to interview farmers in North Powys, under caution to find out how the disease is spreading in the area.
