Union slams trends in employee pension schemes

Amicus MSF, the union for manufacturing, science and finance workers, has said taxpayers will have to pick up the tab for shortfalls in occupational pensions.

Amicus MSF, the union for manufacturing, science and finance workers, has said taxpayers will have to pick up the tab for shortfalls in occupational pensions.

The union was speaking against the growing trend away from defined benefit pension schemes as employers look to cut employee pension contribution costs.

This trend means the onus for contributory pensions is placed squarely on the employee.

Jerry Shanahan, a spokesman for the Amicus MSF union, said: "People should stop and think.

"We don’t need to rush headlong into a situation of moving from defined benefit to defined contribution.

"From the Government’s point of view, I think they need to put some serious analysis into it as well."
