Cyclists are to be targeted by Gardaí for minor road offences.

New powers to fine rule-breaking cyclists, which are being planned by the Department of Transport, will include a new €40 fine for minor road offences.

Offences that will warrant a fine include breaking red lights, cycling the wrong way down one-way streets, and riding on footpaths or without adequate lights on the bicycle.

Car drivers will also be eligible for new fines.

Motorists who block junctions, drive cars with bald tyres or make illegal turns will get a minimum €40 fine.

Motorists caught driving while using a mobile phone will face hefty penalties in the coming year.

The Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is planning to introduce an almost identical ban as that coming into force in Britain next week.

The legislation here hasn't yet been finalised but it is understood offenders will face three months imprisonment, a fine of €190 and one penalty point.

The proposed regulation will be published in the New Year as part of the Traffic Bill.
