Crufts 'shocked by Irish setter's death'; owners say he was poisoned
The organiser of Crufts has said it was “shocked and saddened” to learn one of the dogs competing in the show died after returning home.
Three-year-old Irish setter Thendara Satisfaction, known as Jagger, collapsed and died after returning from the dog show to Belgium, its co-owner told the Dog World website.
His owners say a postmortem examination showed that beef cubes in Jagger’s stomach were the source of the poison.
A spokeswoman for The Kennel Club said they were awaiting a toxicology report from Belgian police to shed some light on Jagger’s death.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club secretary, said: “The Kennel Club is deeply shocked and saddened to hear that Jagger the Irish setter died some 26 hours after leaving Crufts.
“We have spoken to his owners and our heartfelt sympathies go out to them. We understand that the toxicology report is due next week and until that time we cannot know the cause of this tragic incident. ”
Jagger, who came second in his class at Birmingham’s NEC on Thursday, is co-owned by Aleksandra Lauwers and Leicester-based breeder Dee Milligan-Bott, the BBC reported.
Mrs Lauwers’s husband Willem said the couple was “devastated” by the death. Mr Lauwers said a post-mortem showed he had been poisoned, but a full toxicology report should reveal more, the BBC said.
