Fires damaged or destroyed six rural Alabama churches overnight, and investigators said that at least some of them may have been arson.

Most of the churches were Baptist, and all but one were in Bibb County, about 25 miles south of Birmingham, and near major motorways.

The other church, in Chilton County, had been undergoing construction and might not have been related to the others, said Ragan Ingram, a spokesman for the state insurance agency that oversees fire investigations.

No arrests have been made.
