Opposition parties are coming down hard on Minister McCreevy this evening over what they term is his total neglect of Irish children.

Referring to the Budget, Labour party spokesperson on education Jan O'Sullivan is shocked that there was only a €6 increase in social welfare payments.

She says that not only has the Minister cut education back in the Book of Estimates but that now "the Government has frozen the incomes of families of the poorest children".

The Labour party spokesperson also questioned the cutting back of public sector places and says that this may mean no delivery on special needs teachers, education welfare officers and speech therapists.
