FG says Ahern's health promise was 'empty'

Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan has dismissed Fianna Fail leader Bertie Ahern’s promise to shelve his National Stadium plans if the money is needed to fund the health service.

Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan has dismissed Fianna Fail leader Bertie Ahern’s promise to shelve his National Stadium plans if the money is needed to fund the health service.

At the launch of Fianna Fail’s health strategy yesterday, Mr Ahern said the stadium would not be built at the expense of the health service, but Mr Noonan believes this was an empty promise.

“I regard the commitment he made as typical Bertie babble when he’s under pressure,” he said.

“It's another exercise in ambiguity. As anybody who has been anywhere near Government knows, you can’t take money out of a project if you’re contractually committed to it.”
