The Government is due to appoint a regulator for the taxi industry today, more than two years after the deregulation of the sector.

The Government is due to appoint a regulator for the taxi industry today, more than two years after the deregulation of the sector.

The regulator will be appointed on an interim basis until a full-time position with statutory powers is created this summer.

He or she will set the standards required of people seeking taxi licences, as well as deciding on the number of taxis which would be suitable for different towns and cities.
