Bianca Jagger - former wife of Rolling Stone Mick - today lent her backing to a planned protest against petrol company Esso’s approach to the environment.

Environmental pressure groups are urging the public to boycott Esso petrol stations in the UK tomorrow in a protest against the company’s opposition to the Kyoto climate change agreement.

Ms Jagger said that the protest, supported by Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, aimed to encourage greater corporate accountability.

‘‘I think it will give us consumers back the right to be able to hold companies accountable for what they do, the right to be able to say no when we think that a company is not really looking after our well being,’’ she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

The threat posed by global warming was a serious one and needed to be addressed as a matter of urgency, she argued.

‘‘Things have become extremely serious, and we are facing a catastrophe if we don’t act.’’

Ms Jagger argued that Esso have ‘‘never invested a single penny in renewable energy’’.

The company argues that they are working on the long term risks of climate change, through cleaner fuel technology and energy efficiency projects.

It says the Kyoto accord is flawed, and would impose significant economic costs in the developed world without reducing emissions.
