Russia’s Pacific Fleet is reportedly sending two warships to the Persian Gulf next month ahead of possible US military action against Iraq.

Two anti-submarine ships and a tanker are due to leave in the second half of February, a navy official told the Interfax-Military News Agency today.

He said ships from other Russian fleets could also take part in the deployment.

The ships will be given the task of "protecting Russia’s national interests in the region in the event of the escalation of an armed conflict between the United States and Iraq," the agency said.
