More than 40 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, when a commuter train collided with a track-laying train in the southern German city of Munich today, police said.

The commuter train, with about 100 people on board, was approaching the Leuchtenbergring station at about 19 mph when the accident happened at 9.20am local time (0720 GMT).

The impact shattered windows and jolted passengers out of their seats. Police said the 10 most seriously injured people were taken to hospitals with bone fractures, while 32 more suffered cuts and bruises.

Germany’s Deutsche Bahn railroad said the likely cause of the accident was one of the drivers passing a red light.
