Burton 'upset and distressed' over RTE's creche footage

The Social Protection Minister Joan Burton has said the revelation of child mistreatment at a number of creches is "extremely upsetting and distressing".

Last night's Prime Time Investigates programme showed undercover footage of young children being manhandled by some staff at two facilities in Dublin and one in Wicklow.

Ms Burton said she is also extremely surprised that she could not see any creche management in the footage captured.

The minister said the inaccurate completion of children's log books, which are then given to parents, is also a disturbing matter.

She said: "I was extremely upset and distressed watching it.

"I think for anybody who has been a parent or who has been involved with children in creches, the sight of a two-year-old being strapped into chairs at a time when they are at their most active and their most demanding, I thought that was really regrettable."
