Slobodan Milosevic’s wife today accused the UN war crimes court of attempts to kill the ailing ex-Yugoslav president by keeping him in custody.
Mirjana Markovic said that trial in The Hague amounts to “a form of organised murder.”
“They want to kill the man,” Markovic told a Belgrade news magazine. “They cannot deal with him in any other way.”
Milosevic’s trial has been suspended and judges this week ordered a heart and psychiatric examination to determine whether the former Balkan strongman is capable of enduring the proceedings.
Milosevic, 61, has complained of exhaustion and high blood pressure.
His health problems have already delayed his war crimes trial by a month and triggered fears of further complications.
Milosevic has chosen to defend himself in court and rejected the help of defence lawyers.
He faces life imprisonment if convicted on any of the 66 counts of war crimes, including genocide, for his alleged involvement in a decade of Balkan wars.
