Nicholas duo go for Gold

Paul Nicholls hurls Twist Magic and Natal back into the breach at Exeter on Tuesday.

Paul Nicholls hurls Twist Magic and Natal back into the breach at Exeter on Tuesday.

The Ditcheat duo are two of nine declared runners for the ever-informative William Hill Gold Cup Chase.

Ruby Walsh receives the leg-up on Twist Magic, considered by many to have been desperately unfortunate not to have won the 2007 Arkle.

Despite subsequently winning three races on the bounce, including the Tingle Creek last December, Twist Magic jumped poorly in both the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot and the Champion Chase back at Cheltenham in March.

The six-year-old returned to form at the Punchestown Festival, however, but gives weight away to all eight rivals in this Grade Two challenge.

Stablemate Natal finished second to Twist Magic in the Kerrygold Champion Chase and will be ridden by Nick Scholfield.

Alan King’s stable will be represented by Howle Hill, while the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Mahogany Blaze also takes his chance.

Grade One winner Ashley Brook strives to banish memories of last season’s torrid campaign, with the mud-loving Roman Ark and Mister Quasimodo also engaged.

Bishop’s Bridge and Pauntley Gofa, both of whom will be race-fit, complete the field.

Exeter’s William Gold Cup, better known as the Haldon Gold Cup, has in recent times been won by hallmark names like Azertyuiop, Edredon Bleu and Flagship Uberalles.

Best Mate also claimed top honours in 2001 – but it was also the race in which he lost his life three years ago.
