Nine arrested during protests against Corrib pipeline

Gardaí in Co Mayo have arrested nine people during ongoing protests against the controversial Corrib gas pipeline scheme.

Gardaí in Co Mayo have arrested nine people during ongoing protests against the controversial Corrib gas pipeline scheme.

Four of the arrests were made yesterday after a blockade of the road leading to the Shell compound in Glengad.

A further five people were arrested at a second demonstration in the area last night.

All nine detainees are expected to be brought before Ballina District Court today charged with public order offences.

The protest come as the world's largest pipe-laying vessel continues work in Broadhaven Bay on the pipeline connecting Glengad with the Corrib gas field 80kms away.

The Solitaire is being protected by two Navy vessels and hundreds of gardaí.
