Derry O'Rourke, the former Irish international swimming coach who was jailed for 12 years for sexually abusing young girls who were under his supervision, has been released from prison.

Concerns had been expressed that the 59-year-old, from Edenderry, Co Offaly, was being released early.

However, the Irish Prison Service said O'Rourke, who was serving his sentence at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, was not granted early release.

He served nine years of his sentence, due to the fact that prisoners are entitled to a 25% reduction of their sentences for good behaviour.
