Park rangers in northern Australia have been ordered to kill any large crocodile they find after a 20-year-old man disappeared today while swimming in a crocodile-infested river.

Rangers are searching for a missing man in the Daly River after his partner who was watching from the riverbank told police she saw a crocodile nearby.

Police say wildlife workers are searching the river for the man as well as the crocodile.

If it was a crocodile attack, it would be the second fatal one in a month in the Northern Territory.

Last month, an 11-year-old girl was killed by a crocodile prompting calls for a crocodile cull.

There are an estimated 80,000 crocodiles in the Northern Territory.
