Jolie's mother shocked by "mental problem" claim

Angelina Jolie's mother says she is shocked by claims of her ex-husband (and Jolie's father) Jon Voight that the actress has "serious mental problems".

Marcheline Bertrand says there is nothing wrong with her daughter’s mental health.

"Mentally and physically she is magnificently healthy," she tells People Magazine.

She says that while the last few months have been tough for Jolie, she has made it through.

"Over the next few months people will see how strong and beautiful and healthy she is."

The 27-year-old recently split from her second husband, Billy Bob Thornton.

Actor Voight wept as he appeared on US TV last week to tell how he had tried but failed to reach his daughter to provide support.

"I haven’t come forward and addressed the serious mental problems she has spoken about so candidly to the press over the years, but I’ve tried behind the scenes in every way," he said.

He did not specify what the problems were, but said they were "serious symptoms" of a "real illness".

Jolie said: "I don’t want to make public the reasons for my bad relationship with my father."

The actress is due to start shooting the sequel to Tomb Raider in Greece later this month.
