An attack on a house in Derry that saw a 26-year-old man shot in the leg was today blamed on dissidents republicans.

A number of shots were fired through the front window of the house in the Hollymount Park area shortly after 11pm last night.

The injured man was taken to hospital but his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

A 22-year-old man in the house at the same time escaped injury.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey, who lives in the area, condemned the shooting.

"Dissident republicans have already shown their ability to cause disruption and damage," he said.

"What we need to see from them now is an ability to move away from violence as the people of Derry want them to.

"I encourage anyone with information on this incident to contact the PSNI immediately."

Detectives said they are investigating a motive for the shooting and are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Hollymount Park area late yesterday evening and may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
