Consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest level in almost four years, according to the latest assessment by the ESRI and IIB Bank.
The two organisations say fears about a weakening property market and a broader economic slowdown have pushed their Consumer Sentiment Index down from 83.2 in June to 74.7 in July.
Almost two-thirds of consumers expect unemployment to increase in the coming year.
Just over half have a negative outlook for the economy in general, with only 14% holding a positive view.
