Trimble seeks IRA statement to boost Leeds Castle talks

Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble has called for an early statement from the Provisional IRA regarding its future intentions.

Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble has called for an early statement from the Provisional IRA regarding its future intentions.

Speaking at Leeds Castle in Britain today, Mr Trimble said such a statement was needed to help the Northern parties focus on restoring the political institutions in the North.

"There have been rumours that the spokesman of that private army, one P O'Neill, may be about to say something," he said.

"The sooner we hear it and the clearer the message the better, because we need to know that there is now going to be complete decommissioning, that the private army is going to be wound up, and then we can get down to the issue of seeing the Assembly put in place again."
