Bulgarian diplomats kicked out of Moscow for 'spying'

Three Bulgarian diplomats declared persona non-grata for alleged intelligence activities have left for home.

The Bulgarians were asked to leave on Monday for "activity inconsistent with diplomatic status," a euphemism for spying. They were ordered to be out of Moscow by Friday.

Their expulsion was in retaliation for Bulgaria's demanding the recall of three Russian diplomats accused of spying.

The three diplomats left aboard an Aeroflot Russian airlines flight to Sofia, it was reported. It said the three Russian diplomats would most likely return to Moscow on the same plane.

Bulgarian Ambassador Iliyan Vasilev said he hoped the departure of the three diplomats would put an end to the spy scandal.
