The Taoiseach has admitted at the Mahon Tribunal that there was no necessity for his friends to give him a dig-out in the early 1990s because he had savings of up to £54,000 at the time.
Bertie Ahern is in the witness box today for the third time in under a year.
He was questioned this morning about why he took out a loan in the early 1990s when he had saved thousands of pounds in cash.
He was also questioned about a decision by his friends to collect money for him in the aftermath of his marital separation.
Mr Ahern admitted that there was no necessity for them to do this as he had cash saved.
He stressed again that the decision to collect money for him was not his and he only accepted it on the basis that it was a loan.
