Pierrepoint (Lions Gate, €21.99), tells the story of British hangman Albert Pierrepoint’s (a fine performance by Timothy Spall) whose little secret — he doesn’t tell his wife, Anne — takes some getting used to.
Carrying out over 600 executions, from Nazi war criminals to infamous murderers, Pierrepoint’s attempts to hide his second job fail thanks to increasing public interest and a growing campaign against capital punishment, but his moral dilemma is brilliantly captured.
