Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has accused lawyers of encouraging their clients to sue the State at the expense of Irish taxpayers.

Mr McCreevy said some lawyers regard the public finances as the equivalent of a bank machine which gives out free cash.

He was speaking after the Supreme Court overturned a €48,000 damages award made to a Dublin man who claimed he was exposed to asbestos while working in Leinster House.

Mr McCreevy welcomed the ruling, saying it would save public money.
