The cabinet is set to discuss the threat of 2,000 job losses at the Dell plant in Limerick when it holds its first meeting of the new year today.

Defence Minister Willie O'Dea says he will be raising the issue as the company prepares to make an announcement in the coming days.

There are fears that 2,000 of the 3,000 workers at the plant may lose their jobs if Dell pushes ahead with a plan to transfer manufacturing to Poland.

Thousands more ancillary jobs could also be lost if the Raheen facility is scaled back.

The Government has been under pressure from local businesses to come up with a plan to ensure as many jobs as possible are retained in Limerick.
