A strong aftershock rocked the quake-ravaged zone east of Algiers today, killing at least one person and injuring 56 others, Algeria’s Information Ministry officials said.

Algerian geological officials said the aftershock had a magnitude of 5.8 and was the strongest of several to hit the area since last Wednesday’s quake.

The aftershock was felt throughout the damaged zone. In the quake-ravaged town of Boumerdes, at least one home collapsed.

In one hotel in the capital, Algiers, panicked visitors ran out of the building in fear of a collapse.

Rattled hotel workers huddled together to comfort each other.

Many residents have fled their homes and are living in the streets or in tents set up in parks out of fear that aftershocks may cause unstable buildings to topple over.
