An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded today as Palestinian gunmen opened fire on his unit as they left armoured cars to search for militants in the West Bank town of Jenin.

Two helicopters came to support the small force and strafed the street with heavy machine gun fire, Palestinian security sources said.

A member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, a militia linked to Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, said the soldiers fell into an ambush set up by the gunmen who were waiting in alleys for the troops to get out of their vehicles.
