Germany allows gender-neutral birth certificates

Germany has become the first European country to allow babies to be registered as neither male or female.

The new law allows gender to be left blank on a birth certificate, if a baby is born with the characteristics of both sexes.

It is designed to remove the pressure on parents to make quick decisions on controversial sex assignment surgery for newborn babies.
