Dwyer defence claims gardaí were 'leaking like a sieve'

A leading detective investigating Elaine O'Hara's death has agreed in court that leaks to the media following Graham Dwyer's arrest were the worst he had witnessed in his career.

However, under cross examination by Mr Dwyer's lawyers, Detective Sergeant Peter Woods has denied that there was a concerted effort by gardaí to make sure of a media presence.

The jury has heard that hours after the architect's arrest in October 2013 gardaí were at his Foxrock home while a search was underway.

By lunchtime, the national news had information that could only have come from the Garda Pulse system, including the fact that the suspect had no previous convictions.

It has been described by defence barrister Remy Farrell as a "full blown media frenzy" with gardaí "leaking like a sieve".

Detective Sergeant Woods agreed that, while he had been "fuming" about the leaks, they were never investigated.

Graham Dwyer of Kerrymount Close, Foxrock denies murdering childcare worker Elaine O'Hara at Killakee mountain in Dublin in August 2012.
